License term

Salesperson licenses operate on a three-year cycle. Expiration dates vary by licensee — use the date shown on your issued license or the official lookup, not a general "renewal season" assumption.

The 18-hour continuing education requirement

Complete at least 18 hours of continuing education during the three-year cycle. Every year of the cycle requires at least 2 hours on real-estate laws, rules, or court cases and at least 1 hour on fair-housing compliance; the remaining hours may be completed at any point before renewal. Retain acceptable CE evidence for at least four years.

Renewing through MiPLUS

The renewal application becomes available no sooner than 90 days before expiration and is completed through MiPLUS. The current salesperson renewal fee is $78.

CE Marketplace

CE Marketplace may help track your continuing education. It is not a substitute for your own recordkeeping and certification, and it is not the authoritative license-status system — LARA has not transferred legal responsibility for your records to CE Marketplace.

"No Employer" status and broker transfer

Michigan does not offer an official "escrow" license status. A salesperson removed by their employer may remain in "No Employer" status until expiration or transfer to a holding company. A broker transfer is submitted through MiPLUS Modification; the salesperson cannot be licensed to more than one broker at once.

Relicensure for a lapsed license

The current relicensure fee is $108.

Expired less than three years: complete 6 hours of CE for each elapsed year and partial year, including the applicable annual law/rules and fair-housing components, and follow the current MiPLUS relicensure process.

Expired three years or more: current LARA guidance provides alternative pathways, which may include passing the current examination, completing a new 40-hour prelicensure course within the current 12-month window, or completing the required missed CE. Use the current guide for exact eligibility and document requirements — relicensure at this stage is not the same as ordinary renewal, and the exam is not necessarily mandatory in every case if the current guide provides an alternative.
