Nine steps to a Michigan real estate license
The same standard first-time salesperson path as the hub, broken into ordered, actionable steps.
Step 1 — Confirm eligibility
Be at least 18 years old, review the good-moral-character question on the application, and prepare an SSN or the current applicable affidavit. A non-Michigan resident also prepares the current Consent to Service of Process.
Step 2 — Complete the 40-hour course
Enroll in a course approved for Michigan salesperson credit, including at least 4 hours of civil-rights law and equal opportunity in housing. See the course guide and online guide.
Step 3 — Obtain the course-completion certificate
Your school issues a course-completion certificate. It must be dated within 36 months before your initial application.
Step 4 — Submit MiPLUS and pay $88
Create or use your MiPLUS account, upload the course-completion certificate and any other applicable documents, and pay the current $88 application and three-year license fee. See the application guide.
Step 5 — Receive LARA/PSI eligibility and a Candidate ID
After LARA reviews and approves the application, the PSI eligibility communication and Candidate ID arrive, and only then can you register to test.
Step 6 — Schedule and pass PSI
Register with PSI for the current $79 exam fee and choose a test center or remote-proctored format. See the exam guide and exam prep guide.
Step 7 — Enter the employing broker's license number
After passing, enter the employing broker's 10-digit license number through the MiPLUS Modification process.
Step 8 — Obtain broker approval and license issuance
The broker must approve the request. The salesperson license is issued only after that approval, and you'll receive electronic notice.
Step 9 — Maintain CE and renew
Track your individual expiration date, complete the required continuing education, and renew through MiPLUS. See the renewal & CE guide.
