New Jersey Real Estate License Requirements
Everything NJREC requires before approving an initial salesperson license.
Core Eligibility Checklist
- At least 18 years of age.
- High school education or recognized equivalency.
- 75 hours of prelicensure education at a New Jersey licensed school.
- Passing score on the current PSI salesperson examination.
- Fingerprint-based criminal-history record check through the current contracted process.
- A sponsoring broker whose Broker of Record submits the original application.
- Honesty, trustworthiness, character, and integrity as evaluated by NJREC.
- NJREC approval before performing licensed activity.
Broker candidates have separate education, experience, approval, and examination requirements.
The Character Standard
Applicants must satisfy New Jersey’s statutory standards of honesty, trustworthiness, character, and integrity and complete the required criminal-history record check.
A disclosed conviction or disciplinary history may require individual review. Do not rely on simplified automatic-disqualification lists; use current NJREC guidance and provide complete, accurate disclosures.

When the Standard Requirements Don't Fully Answer Your Situation
The baseline age, education, and character requirements are consistent, but some situations need direct confirmation from NJREC before you proceed.
- Prior criminal history of any kind: NJREC applies a statutory character review. Do not assume any past conviction is automatically disqualifying or automatically forgiven; confirm your specific situation with NJREC before paying for a course.
- Out-of-state applicants: New Jersey does not have reciprocity agreements. See the reciprocity guide for what this does and does not mean.
- Name or identity documentation mismatches: fingerprint and application processing can stall on document inconsistencies; resolve these before submission.
Requirement versus evidence
| Requirement | Evidence/status |
|---|---|
| Age/education baseline | Candidate eligibility information |
| 75-hour course | Course completion |
| PSI record | Eligibility issuance |
| Exam | PSI result |
| Fingerprinting | Completion |
| Sponsorship/application | Broker submission |
| Licensure | NJREC approval |
These statuses are not a universal document list and do not substitute for the current official workflow.
