New Jersey Real Estate License Exam (PSI)

What to expect from the PSI-administered salesperson exam — format, scoring, and scheduling.

Exam Format

The salesperson exam blends national principles with New Jersey law rather than splitting them into separate sections. It contains 110 scored questions plus 5 to 10 possible unscored experimental questions, within a four-hour limit. A minimum score of 70%—77 correct of 110—is required.

Broker candidates follow a separate NJREC approval and PSI examination process. Use the current broker-specific bulletin rather than applying salesperson figures to the broker exam.

Scheduling With PSI

Your licensed school must report the 75-hour course completion electronically to PSI before scheduling. PSI currently offers test-center and remote-proctored delivery. Availability, technical requirements, and score-report procedures can change, so use the current bulletin during registration.

Your eligibility window is one year
The electronic PSI eligibility record expires one year to the day from issuance. You must pass the exam and complete the licensing application before it expires.

Score Reporting and Next Steps

Understanding what happens right after you finish the exam helps you plan the following steps without delay.

  • Your pass/fail result is generated by PSI as part of the exam session.
  • A pass does not itself authorize practice — fingerprinting, sponsoring-broker selection, and the original application still remain.
  • Begin fingerprinting promptly after passing; NJDOBI recommends this specifically so the full application can be filed before your eligibility record expires.
  • If you do not pass, confirm current retake scheduling and any waiting period directly through PSI before assuming a specific retake date.

Before scheduling

  • Confirm PSI eligibility has been issued and record the actual expiration date.
  • Read the current bulletin.
  • Choose a current test-center or remote option where available.
  • Verify current identification and appointment instructions directly from PSI.

Scored and possible unscored items

The salesperson examination has 110 scored questions. PSI may also administer 5–10 unscored experimental questions; all consume examination time.

After passing

Retain current result information, complete fingerprints promptly, choose a sponsoring broker, have the Broker of Record submit the application, and wait for NJREC approval.
