New Jersey Real Estate Commission (NJREC)
Who regulates real estate licensing in New Jersey and where applicants should verify current requirements.
What NJREC Is
NJREC is the body that administers New Jersey real estate licensing within the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.
What NJREC Does
- Issues, denies, renews, suspends, and revokes real estate licenses under current law.
- Administers licensing, education, continuing-education, fee, and application requirements.
- Reviews applicant character, trustworthiness, and criminal-history disclosures.
- Provides official records, search tools, and regulatory notices.
PSI currently administers the examinations, but PSI does not issue the license.

Distinguishing the Parties in Your Application
Candidates sometimes contact the wrong party with a question. This table clarifies who controls what.
| Party | Role | Contact for |
|---|---|---|
| NJREC / NJDOBI | Regulator; issues, reviews, and approves licenses; sets education and CE rules; handles discipline | Application status, character-review questions, licensing rules |
| PSI Services LLC | Administers the licensing exam | Exam scheduling, eligibility record, exam-day logistics |
| Licensed schools | Deliver the 75-hour course and report completion to PSI | Course scheduling, format, and completion reporting |
| Fingerprint vendor (currently IDEMIA) | Conducts criminal-history record checks | Fingerprint appointment and fee |
| Sponsoring broker / Broker of Record | Employs the candidate and files the original application | Sponsorship, application filing |
Who to contact for which problem
| Question | First contact |
|---|---|
| Licensed-school approval or course requirement | NJREC/NJDOBI |
| PSI eligibility record or exam appointment | PSI |
| Fingerprint appointment or process | Current fingerprint vendor and NJDOBI instructions |
| Sponsorship or application submission | Sponsoring broker or Broker of Record |
| License approval or status inconsistency | NJREC/NJDOBI |
What NJREC controls and what it does not directly administer
NJREC controls licensing standards, review, approval, and regulatory oversight. PSI administers the current examination, and the contracted vendor performs fingerprint capture.
Before contacting the regulator
Have the relevant route, current official record, dates, candidate information, and a specific unresolved question ready. Do not assume a document is required unless the current official workflow says so.
