California Real Estate Continuing Education

California CE is not the same product as pre-license education. This page helps active or recently expired California licensees choose the correct 45-hour DRE-approved renewal package, identify first-renewal versus subsequent-renewal subject requirements, preserve CE certificates for audit risk, and avoid buying the wrong course type.

PathReady is an independent licensing guide. It is not the California Department of Real Estate, a CE provider, or a real estate school. CE rules, course approvals, renewal windows, and provider offerings can change; verify current DRE requirements before purchasing or renewing.

The CE page is about renewal compliance, not getting a first license.

The most common mistake is buying “real estate classes” without checking the license stage. First-time applicants need statutory/pre-license education. Existing licensees approaching renewal need DRE-approved continuing education.

Quick answer: what CE package should you buy?
  1. Check your license status. Determine whether you are renewing for the first time, renewing for the second/subsequent time, renewing late, or returning after a lapse.
  2. Choose the correct 45-hour package. A first renewal package is not always the same as a subsequent-renewal survey package.
  3. Confirm California DRE approval. Generic national CE, NAR training, broker-office training, or MLS webinars may not satisfy DRE CE unless approved for the required category.
  4. Keep proof. Save course certificates, provider name, course type, completion date, and any transcript page before submitting renewal.

Match the course package to the license stage.

“California real estate continuing education” can mean several different things. The right answer depends on whether the licensee is a salesperson, broker, officer, first renewal, subsequent renewal, late renewal, or exempt long-time licensee.

First-renewal CE is more prescriptive than a generic 45-hour bundle.

A licensee renewing an original license for the first time should not simply buy the cheapest CE bundle. The bundle has to cover the correct mandatory subjects and category hours for the license type.

Trap
“45 hours” is necessary but not enough.
The package also has to match the first-renewal subject mix. A provider can sell 45 hours that still does not fit your renewal if the subjects are wrong or the approval status is stale.

Later renewals usually revolve around mandatory subjects, consumer protection, and remaining elective CE.

For second and later renewals, many licensees look for a compact 45-hour package. The important check is whether the package includes the current mandatory-subject coverage, consumer protection hours, and approved remaining hours.

Provider selection should be based on approval, subject fit, certificate reliability, and audit readiness.

Confirm that a course package is usable for the correct California renewal category before buying it.

Approval
Provider and exact course approval
Check the specific CE provider, course title, course type, and category. Do not rely only on brand familiarity or “California” in the product name.
Package Fit
First or subsequent renewal
Confirm whether the package is for first renewal, subsequent renewal, broker or officer renewal, or a special category.
Proof
Certificate delivery
The provider should make completion certificates easy to download, store, and reproduce if DRE audits your renewal.
Format
Correspondence / live / online workflow
Confirm the delivery format, final exam rules, timer rules, device access, and customer support before purchase.
Timing
Renewal deadline compatibility
Do not buy a slow or support-heavy course package days before expiration unless you know the provider’s completion and certificate timing.
Avoid
Cheap package with unclear categories
Low price is not helpful if the package leaves you short on mandatory subjects, consumer protection, or audit documentation.

Treat CE certificates like a compliance file, not a checkout receipt.

DRE can audit continuing education after renewal. A licensee who cannot produce course completion certificates may face fine or disciplinary risk, so the post-course file matters.

Practical rule. After completing CE, download every certificate immediately, save a PDF copy in a renewal folder, and keep a screenshot or transcript page showing the full 45-hour package composition. Do this before relying on the package for renewal.

Late renewal and CE exemption are separate from ordinary CE shopping.

Most users should buy the correct 45-hour CE package and renew before expiration. Late renewal, extension, and exemption paths are narrower and should be treated as compliance issues rather than shopping filters.

Inactive or uncertain statusLicensee is unsure whether renewal is available, late, expired, or requires additional steps.Check status and DRE renewal instructions before buying a package blindly.

Los Angeles, San Diego, Bay Area, and Orange County use the same statewide CE rules.

Provider convenience and scheduling vary locally, but California continuing education remains a statewide renewal requirement rather than a county-level system.

Los Angeles
Large brokerage / association footprint
LA licensees often care about CE timing around broker office compliance, MLS/association renewal, team onboarding, and property-management risk.
San Diego
Renewal continuity
San Diego renewal planning may combine deadline urgency, online-course preferences, and local broker-supervision needs.
Bay Area
High compliance sensitivity
Bay Area licensees may need CE that supports disclosure, agency, fair housing, property management, and high-value transaction compliance.
Orange County
Consumer-facing practice lanes
OC licensees often need CE planning around residential sales, leases, broker office standards, and renewal timing.

California real estate continuing education questions

Most California salesperson, broker, and officer renewals require 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education within the four-year license period. The subject mix depends on whether it is a first renewal or a second/subsequent renewal.

No. CE is for renewing an existing California real estate license. First-time salesperson candidates need statutory/pre-license education, not renewal CE.

A first-time salesperson renewal requires 45 clock hours, including separate ethics, agency, trust fund handling, risk management, fair housing with an interactive participatory component, implicit bias training, consumer protection, and any remaining consumer service or consumer protection hours.

A first-time broker or officer renewal also requires 45 clock hours, with mandatory subjects including ethics, agency, trust fund handling, risk management, management and supervision, fair housing with an interactive participatory component, implicit bias training, consumer protection, and remaining consumer service or consumer protection hours.

For second and subsequent renewals, DRE allows a 9-hour CE survey course covering the seven mandatory subjects, or individual mandatory courses in those subjects, plus consumer protection and any remaining eligible hours.

California generally allows renewal during the two-year late renewal period after expiration, but licensees cannot perform activities requiring a real estate license until the license has been renewed.

Many salesperson, broker, and officer renewals can be completed through DRE eLicensing, but the licensee must satisfy applicable CE requirements before renewal.

DRE recommends retaining copies of CE completion certificates for up to five years so the licensee can respond quickly if selected for CE audit.

A limited 70/30 exemption may apply to licensees who are 70 or older and have been California real estate licensees in good standing for 30 continuous years, but it must be requested and approved under DRE rules.

Check that the provider and exact courses are DRE-approved for California continuing education, that the package matches first or subsequent renewal status, and that certificates are delivered clearly enough for renewal and audit records.
